SURFACE DESIGN CLASS #4: INTRODUCTION TO SHIBORI

A 4-Hour Indigo Dyeing Class

Saturday, NOVEMBER 11  / Noon to 4 PM

Class Description:

No prior experience needed.  This is an introduction to Shibori, where you will learn to stitch, string-wrap, clamp, twist, and otherwise manipulate white fabric to create patterns in the cloth when dyed in our indigo vat.  

The art is in being patient and precise in preparing the fabric.

Cost per person : $150                                

50% of your payment is a non-refundable deposit. If you are unable to attend the class after registering, 50% of your payment will be refunded.

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST

Students should bring all of the following with the to the workshop:

Please wash and pre-cut in 1/2 yard or 1/4 yard pieces

  • 1 yard white cotton Printcloth or Pimatex cotton
  • 1 yard white lightweight linen
  • 1 yard white medium weight linen
  • 1 yard white silk charmeuse 9mm (optional)
  • 1/2 yard each Silk Taffeta, Dupionni, or Chiffon in white or ivory (also optional)

Note:

white print cloth will be available for sale by the yard during class

OTHER SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED

  • latex gloves (VERY IMPORTANT, unless you like indigo fingers ;))
  • painting apron, shirt or smock
  • LOTS of medium sized rubber bands
  • 2 rolls or medium weight kitchen string
  • small, medium, and large metal clamps/clips
  • plastic pipe in various diameters / about 18’ long
  • flat lids for food cans in various sizes (at least 4 of each size)
  • flat pieces of wood lathe various lengths
  • roll of paper towels
  • plastic bags
  • chopsticks or skewers

 

What you DON’T have to bring!

Teacher will supply these items:

  • indigo vat (ready to use)
  • sink and water cleanup 
  • use of additional Shibori supplies if needed
